I’d driven within Chicago, but Jess and I stopped in Indiana for food and gas, and she took over for me. Our original plan had called for arrival in Flushing in the mid-afternoon, but now it looked more like late evening or worse.

Jess and I landed in Chicago and felt exhausted and worn out already. We walked through Midway airport to the Orange Line, and spoke with Sam, who had offered to pick us up downtown. We rode to Roosevelt, and stood on the block between Wabash and Michigan, talking until he arrived.

I’m going without journal entries now, so these last few installments are liable to be abbreviated.

Julie drove Jess and I to Zanesville from Columbus, and we felt dazed by the orderly straight lines on the road and the multiple lanes teeming with traffic.

It was a slogan we came up with in the days leading up to the wedding, and when we finally arrived, we discovered we weren’t the first to think of it.

Our flight was not comfortable, being squeezed and crushed in with over-aggressive air conditioning.

Officially, from this point forward, the colony was named New York after James, the current Duke of York.

Jess had been feeling reluctant to leave throughout the day because we’d have to miss our families and friends at their brightest. As we stopped, briefly, in the granvel road leading out of ArmCo, to adjust the lights and mirrors, she said, “I’m so glad we left!”
