DIARY

– WEEKEND – It was a lovely weekend, despite end-of-the-semester stress. Friday feels like so long ago that I can scarcely remember. Oh yes; on Thursday I’d finished Invisible Cities by Calvino. I spent most of Friday, then, working on my report for Shelley, version #1, but I also cleaned and exercised and so forth. Jess came home and took a nap. On Saturday I woke up and worked on the project for awhile longer, but by early afternoon I started getting skeptical that it was going to pan out. So I emailed Shelley. Jess suggested we go for a walk; we walked to the Walt Whitman library and picked up a couple DVDs: Captain Jon’s Shark Safari and the Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Back home, I wrote two critiques, and Jess fixed us chicken curry for dinner. We watched Captain Jon (which Sharky loved), and I got back to work. Later on, we watched SNL. It was a television heavy weekend. On Sunday, I skipped church (I can make it up some day this week), but finished my two more critiques. Jess and I watched the Life Aquatic (- it was weird -) and had quesadillas and beans and rice for dinner, then went out to 2773. I took some pictures. On the way back we got some coke on the way back for a rum cola. We talked briefly about the possibility of living abroad for a year, possibly in Latin America, after I finish my program. If there’s a time for such adventures, it’s probably now. We want to start a family before getting too much older.

– WEATHER – Is it last week? The same things are happening. The West is boiling except for the actual coastline. The northern midwest is being soaked while further south there’s a threat of thunderstorms. The east is windy and sunny, with a high pressure front being pressed on the west by the midwestern storms and on the east by the same Atlantic storm system that has persisted for five or six days now. I like rain. Everybody else gets rain. Why can’t I?

– RED WINGS – I don’t follow hockey closely, but this is too close to be ignored. Send a breath out for Detroit as they try to win the series against Edmondton and stay in the playoffs.
– PISTONS – They’re in a more profitiable position, but send out a breath for them too.
– TIGERS – Not only did the Tigers sweep the Twins, but the the cumulative score of the three games was 33-1. Someone wasn’t playing defensively… or offensively. But damn. As the Freep reports, the Tigers’ “16-9 record represents its most wins in April since 18-2 in 1984.” Today we play the Royals. Want to just call it 17-9 right now?

– MAY – Is clean air month.
– TODAY – Is International Workers Day! It’s also May Day, Ley Day and Beltane.
– HAPPY BIRTHDAY – Mother Jones, D’arcy Wretzky, Wes Anderson

NEWS OF THE WEEK
Quad-City Times: Former Illinois governor convicted on all counts. Note: Pretty despicable, but I can’t help but consider all of this in light of his anti-death penalty actions on the way out. I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised at a correspondence between Chicago-style politics and Illinois-style.
The New York Times: Workers Hold May Day Rallies Around World.

QUESTION OF THE DAY
What did your bedroom look like when you were eleven?
